RANTHAMBHORE NATIONAL PARK

Ranthambore National Park, renowned as the Best Tiger Friendly Land, stands as the largest and most celebrated national park in northern India. Situated 170 km away from Jaipur, it offers a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and those eager to witness majestic predators in their natural habitat. Originally a hunting ground for Maharajas of Jaipur, it has evolved into the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve Area, a must-visit tourist destination.

The park boasts the distinction of being the only remaining intact dry deciduous forest in India, steeped in a bygone era's charm. Surrounded by water bodies, it provides solace to forest inhabitants during scorching weather. The diverse landscape encompasses cliffs, hills, valleys, and plateaus, creating a unique and captivating ambiance.

Flora and Fauna:
Ranthambore is home to approximately 320 bird species, including residents and migratory birds. The park boasts 40 mammal species and over 35 reptile species. Alongside the famed Bengal Tigers, the park hosts a variety of wild cats such as leopards, caracals, jungle cats, and rusty-spotted cats. Reports even mention fishing cats and leopard cats. Other common sightings include Sambhar, wild boar, Indian wild cats, jackals, and the extremely rare wolf. The diverse terrain and abundant water bodies contribute to an impressive population of birds, both residents and migrants.

Flora:
With around 300 plant species, Ranthambore's flora thrives due to the availability of water. The region receives low rainfall, resulting in a dominance of deciduous trees. Dhok species constitute 80% of the area, serving as a favored diet for deer, antelope, and Nilgai. Other prominent trees include Banyan, pipal, and neem. Fruit-bearing plants like mango, jamun, and ber contribute to the park's rich biodiversity.

History of Ranthambore National Park:
The park's name is derived from the Ranthambore fort, situated in the heart of the jungle. Before India's independence, the subcontinent harbored extensive forest cover. However, with rising population and industrialization, rampant exploitation of forests occurred, leading to a decline in wildlife. Concerned for the nation's biodiversity, strict rules and policies were implemented for Ranthambore Park.

Initially owned by the Maharajas of Jaipur, it served as their exclusive hunting ground until 1955. Subsequently declared the "Sawai Madhopur Sanctuary," the park faced a decline in tiger numbers. In 1973, under Project Tiger, the sanctuary was dedicated to tiger conservation. Further regulations were imposed, and in 1980, 282.03 sq. km were declared a national park. Additional adjacent lands were designated as Kela Devi Sanctuary (1983) and Sawai Mansingh Sanctuary (1984).

Ranthambore National Park stands as a testament to successful conservation efforts, providing a haven for diverse wildlife amidst historical remnants.
